Overview
Hopa Mountain, Salish Kootenai College, and Blackfeet Community College cooperatively offer the Native Science Fellows program for Native American undergraduate and graduate students to participate in community-based science organizations in an effort to increase their engagement in higher education and science careers.
There are four primary goals:
To increase the number of Native American and Latino students who are engaged in community-based science organizations and careers;
To provide role models and work experience for Native American and Latino college students interested in careers in science;
To develop a career ladder network of Native students that are interested in pursuing science careers;
To build a network of community-based science professionals who are committed to the success of Native students and provide ongoing support for personal, academic and professional success.
Native Science Fellowships are competitively awarded to geosciences students with support from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Native Science Public Database

The Native Science Fellows Public Database is a Microsoft Excel document. It includes summaries, keywords, sources, and weblinks (when available) on over 380 articles relating to possible research topics. Articles are organized with an ID code in the left column that relate to a particular “Focus” (these are listed on the “Topics” tab at the bottom of the spread sheet as well as “Inclusive Topics” (e.g. Resource Management, Climate Change, Land & Treaty Rights etc.).
A useful way to search the database is to use the search keyword shortcut on your keyboard: hold Ctrl + F and then type your text in the box that pops up. All articles are also available in hard copy at the Hopa Mountain office (please take note of their ID code to locate hard copies).
Open to Native American and Latino students currently matriculating into or attending a tribal college or university in Montana.
